Varanasi, which is picturesquely situated on the crescent-shaped left bank of the holy Ganga, is, besides Nalanda, one of the ancient centres of learning in India. It is said to be a compound of the names of two streams, the Varuna and the Assi, which even now flow in the north and south of the town respectively.
Varanasi is probably one of the most ancient living cities in India. From times immemorial, it has been a great pilg Carmichael, grimage centre for the Hindus, who throng here in millions every year.
CITY/ TEMPLE TOUR OF VARANASI
Visit Kashi Vishvnath Temple – It is commonly known as the Golden Temple, which is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is considered to be the lord of the city. This is considered to be the holiest point in the city, Bharat Mata Temple – This is a distinct temple dedicated to Mother India. It has a relief map of India, which is made from marble, unlike other temples that have a relief of gods and goddesses. This distinct temple of India’s mother was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, who was a gift from the nationalists Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta & Shri Durga Prasad. Tulsi Manas Temple – In the modern marble sikhara style, Tulsi Manas Temple, which is a shrine dedicated to Lord Rama, is a treat to the eyes, as it is made from white marble, with verses & instances from ‘Ram Charit Manas’ etched on it.
The Evening Witness a Live “Aarti” Ceremony on the bank of River Ganges
Later in the evening, witness the Aarti ceremony – The Aarti Ceremony can be described as a Hindu ritual in which light, which is created with the use of wicks that are saturated with ghee, that is, clarified butter, is offered in a form of worship to the goddesses. The ceremony of Aarti is a part of almost all worship rituals in Hinduism. It is perhaps the first mention of the Ceremony of Aarti that has been discovered in India, which is termed to be the earliest scripture of Hinduism, namely, Rig Veda, which is a historical text on Hindu worship rituals. Perhaps from the Rig Veda, it might be said that the practice of conducting the ceremony of Aarti is a result of the application of the Vedic theory of sacrificial fire rituals, that is, Homa. The word “Aarti” might itself be a result of a combination of two different words “Aa,” that is, “towards,” and “Rati,” which is coined from a Sanskrit phrase that denotes the “highest love for God”. Diwali, the largest celebration in India, originated in Ayodhya, where the city was illuminated with clay lamps to greet the triumphant Rama who had defeated Ravana and returned home.
According to the Atharva Veda, Ayodhya is a “city built by Gods and being prosperous like paradise itself.” Islam, Buddhism, and Jainism all flourished here, and their effects can be seen all around the town. Hinduism was not the only faith to do so. Five Jain Tirthankars, including Adinath, were born in Ayodhya. Afterwards, continue exploring Ayodhya.

Hindu followers hold the Ram Janmabhoomi in the highest regard.
